If you have a kid (or a partner) who's into anime, robots, or anything mecha, this is a non-negotiable Tokyo stop. A 19.7-meter-tall, fully-detailed RX-0 Unicorn Gundam stands outside DiverCity Tokyo Plaza in Odaiba. It moves. It lights up. There's a soundtrack. Your kids will lose their minds.
What makes it special: this isn't a static statue. Several times a day the Gundam transforms between "Unicorn Mode" and "Destroy Mode" — panels open, the head's V-fin splits, lights flash, the soundtrack from the anime plays. The transformations only last about 30 seconds but they're INCREDIBLE. After dark, there's a full projection-mapping show on the DiverCity facade behind it (every 30 min from 7:30pm).
Kid tips:
• Best for ages 4+ — the noise/lights of the transformation can spook toddlers plus little kids. Cover their ears or stand back during the show.
• Transformation times are usually around 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm + evening light shows. Check the Gundam Front Tokyo schedule (it changes seasonally).
• 100% FREE to view — it's outdoors in front of the mall.
• Pair with a meal at DiverCity (kid-friendly food court) and a stop in the Gundam Base store (5th floor) where your kid can buy a model kit to assemble back at the hotel.
• The Gundam Base Tokyo also has a small museum / photo experience inside if your kid is REALLY into it.
• Stroller-friendly. The plaza is wide-open and flat.
• Closest station: Tokyo Teleport or Daiba (Yurikamome line, which is itself a kid-favorite driverless train ride).
We pair this with teamLab Planets (5-min drive away), DiverCity for lunch, and a Yurikamome ride back over Rainbow Bridge at sunset — a perfect Tokyo Bay afternoon with kids.
