Shiraito Falls (literally "White Thread Falls") is one of the most BEAUTIFUL waterfalls I've ever seen — a 150-meter wide, 20-meter tall fan-shaped curtain of water cascading from a moss-covered cliff fed by Mt. Fuji's snowmelt. The hundreds of tiny streams look like silk threads. It's absolutely mesmerizing for kids (and parents).
What makes it special: This is a UNESCO World Heritage site (part of the Mt. Fuji designation), and unlike most waterfalls, the water doesn't come from a single river — it seeps through the volcanic rock from Mt. Fuji's underground springs. Plus there's the smaller Otodome Falls right next door (kids love both). The walking path is short and family-friendly.
Kid tips:
• FREE to enter (small parking fee if driving).
• Best for ALL ages — toddlers plus little kids will be totally captivated by the curtain of water.
• The path down to the viewing area has stairs (about 50-100) — carrier easier than stroller for littles.
• Wear non-slip shoes — the path is misty and can be wet.
• Best in MORNING for fewer crowds and best lighting on the falls.
• Restrooms and food vendors at the top of the path.
• If you have older kids, walk down to the river bottom for the best view.
• Easiest with a car or guided tour from Tokyo. From Fujinomiya Station, take the Fujikyu bus.
We pair this with a Mt. Fuji area day including Lake Kawaguchi, Oishi Park, and Makaino Farm Resort for a perfect day trip with kids.
