Shinjuku Gyoen is the BIG, beautiful, kid-running-friendly park of central Tokyo. 144 acres of open lawns, three styles of garden (Japanese traditional, French formal, English landscape), a giant greenhouse, and over 1,000 cherry trees. With kids, this is where you go when everyone needs to STOP being in a crowd.
What makes it special: unlike Yoyogi or Ueno, Shinjuku Gyoen has a ~500 yen entrance fee — which keeps it noticeably calmer and cleaner. The wide-open central lawn is the dream picnic spot. The Japanese garden has a traditional teahouse and koi ponds. The greenhouse is a lifesaver on cold or rainy days (warm tropical plants, butterflies, kids love it). In sakura season (late March-early April) it's the prettiest urban hanami spot in Tokyo — and arguably the best for families because of the wide spaces.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages. Stroller-friendly throughout. Multiple kid-toilet bathrooms.
• Bring a picnic. The lawn picnic is the BEST way to spend an afternoon here. There's a small konbini-style cafe inside if you forgot.
• NO alcohol allowed (this keeps the vibe family-friendly during sakura season — unlike Ueno Park).
• Entrance fee: ~500 yen for adults, kids under 15 ~250 yen, under 6 free.
• Three entrance gates. Shinjuku Gate (closest to Shinjuku Station) is the busiest. The Sendagaya Gate (closest to JR Sendagaya) is quieter.
• The greenhouse is great for rainy days OR if your toddlers plus little kids need a temperature break.
• Closes at 6pm year-round. Last entry 5:30pm.
• NO drones, frisbees, or balls allowed (keeps it peaceful).
We pair this with a Shinjuku afternoon at Pokemon Center Shinjuku, then dinner in Omoide Yokocho or a kid-friendly izakaya.
