Lake Kawaguchi (Kawaguchiko) is the easiest of the Fuji Five Lakes to reach with kids — about 2 hours from Tokyo by direct bus or train, and this is where we always basecamp for our Mt. Fuji nights. The lake itself is the postcard view: Fuji rising right behind it, reflecting on calm mornings.
What makes it special: this isn't a one-stop "see and leave" — Kawaguchiko is a whole region of kid-friendly attractions packed within a 20-min drive. Oishi Park (lavender + Fuji), the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway, Arakurayama Sengen Park (the famous pagoda + Fuji shot), Lake Kawaguchi Music Forest Museum, and pedal-boat rentals on the lake itself. The pedal swans are LITERALLY shaped like swans — toddlers plus little kids will lose it.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages, including babies. Stroller-friendly around the north shore.
• Stay 2 nights minimum. Day-trips from Tokyo are exhausting and you'll miss sunrise Fuji — the BEST views are 6-8am from the north shore.
• Kawaguchiko is touristy but in a wholesome, families-everywhere way. Onsen hotels with kid-friendly tatami rooms are everywhere.
• Rent a car for the day if you want to do all the surrounding spots quickly. Buses work but are slow.
• If your kids get carsick on mountain roads, dose them up before you start the drive in. The roads up are winding.
• Mornings = clearest Fuji views. By afternoon, clouds usually cover the peak. Plan accordingly.
We pair this with Oishi Park, the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway, and a stay at Kawaguchiko Urban Resort Villa or MAGMA Resort Shimobe for the perfect 2-night Fuji escape.
