Ninenzaka ("two-year slope") is the cobblestone lane that flows directly into Sannenzaka — same Old Kyoto vibe, slightly less hectic, just as photogenic. The two streets together form one of the most magical walks in Higashiyama. With kids, treat them as a single experience.
What makes it special: Ninenzaka has a few standout stops your kids will remember — a Studio Ghibli store (Donguri Republic) where Totoro greets you in the doorway, a Snoopy tea house with character-themed sweets, and the famous "Yasaka Pagoda" view at the bottom (the Hōkan-ji shot every photographer chases). The vibe shifts with the time of day: bustling 10am-4pm, dreamy at sunset, almost empty at sunrise.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages, but cobblestones = carrier > stroller. If you must use a stroller, the lighter the better.
• Pair Ninenzaka + Sannenzaka as one walk, ending at Kiyomizu-dera. Total stroll: 30-45 min including snack stops.
• The Donguri Republic Ghibli store is a kid magnet — expect a 15-min stop minimum if you go in. Set expectations BEFORE entering.
• Toilets: easiest at Kodai-ji entrance (mid-walk) or at the start near Yasaka Shrine.
• Buy soft serve at one stall and split between the kids. Portions are big.
• Same fall-superstition as Sannenzaka ("two years bad luck" if you fall here). Just hold hands.
We pair Ninenzaka with Sannenzaka, Hōkan-ji (Yasaka Pagoda), and Kiyomizu-dera — a perfect Old Kyoto morning with kids.
