Tenryū-ji is the most important temple in Arashiyama, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the head temple of the Rinzai Zen sect. But the REAL reason to visit with kids isn't the temple itself — it's the breathtaking SOGEN POND GARDEN behind it. Designed in the 14th century, it's one of the oldest Zen gardens in Japan that hasn't changed in 700 years. The pond reflects the Arashiyama mountains and the seasonal colors are JAW-DROPPING.
What makes it special: This garden was designed by the famous monk Musō Soseki and is considered Japan's first "borrowed scenery" garden — the surrounding mountains are intentionally part of the design. The path winds around a koi pond, past raked sand, mossy stones, and seasonal flowers. The garden's BACK gate exits directly into the bamboo forest — super efficient route with kids.
Kid tips:
• Garden entry: ¥500 adults, ¥300 kids (or ¥800 to also enter the temple buildings).
• Best for ALL ages — toddlers plus little kids love spotting koi, turtles, and ducks in the pond.
• GO IN MORNING before tour groups arrive (opens 8:30am).
• Stroller-friendly on most paths but a few steps near the dragon ceiling area — carrier helps.
• Bathrooms inside near the entrance.
• USE the back exit to walk straight into the bamboo forest — saves backtracking.
• The Cloud Dragon ceiling painting in the Hatto building is amazing if you do the temple add-on (limited days).
• Just outside the bamboo forest entrance — you literally cannot miss it.
We pair this with the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Togetsukyō Bridge, and Arashiyama Monkey Park for a perfect Arashiyama walking day with kids.
