Sensō-ji is the OLDEST temple in Tokyo (founded in 645 AD!) and one of the easiest, most magical introductions to Japanese culture for kids. The giant red Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) lantern at the entrance is iconic, and the walk through Nakamise Street to the main hall is packed with snack stalls, souvenir shops, and incense smoke. The whole experience feels like stepping into a living storybook.
What makes it special: That MASSIVE red lantern at Kaminarimon is a top photo op (with kids posing under it). The five-story pagoda is gorgeous against the sky, especially when lit up at night. Toss a coin in the incense burner, waft the smoke over your head for good luck, and let your littles draw an omikuji fortune (¥100). Even the youngest kids can participate in these little rituals.
Kid tips:
• Stroller-friendly on the main streets, but it gets PACKED — carrier might be easier with toddlers plus little kids in peak hours.
• Go EARLY (7-9am) for empty photos, or LATE (after 7pm) for the magical glowing lanterns and zero crowds.
• The temple grounds are FREE — no ticket needed.
• Nakamise Street snacks are kid-magnet — try ningyo-yaki (mini sponge cakes filled with red bean) and melon pan ice cream sandwiches.
• Kids LOVE drawing the paper fortunes — if you get a bad one, tie it to the rack and leave the bad luck behind.
• Bathrooms near the main hall and at Asakusa Culture Center across the street.
• Asakusa Station (Ginza/Asakusa lines) is a 2-minute walk.
We pair this with Nakamise Street, Asakusa Hanayashiki, and a Sumida River cruise for a perfect old-Tokyo day with kids.
