If your kids are even slightly adventurous eaters, the Tsukiji Outer Market is a MUST. The inner wholesale market moved to Toyosu years ago, but the OUTER market is still buzzing with vendors selling tamago skewers, fresh sushi, grilled scallops, strawberry mochi, wagyu beef sticks — it's basically a giant outdoor street food playground for the whole family.
What makes it special: This is where Tokyo locals (and chefs) come to shop and snack. The energy is electric — vendors yelling, knives flashing, smoke from grills. Even picky littles can find something they'll love (start with the sweet tamago egg skewers — ¥150 and ALWAYS a hit). Don't miss the famous strawberry shortcake at Saka no Ue or fresh uni rice bowls if your older kids are bold.
Kid tips:
• Best for ages 3+. Stroller possible but TIGHT — baby carrier is way easier with toddlers plus little kids in the crowds.
• Go EARLY (8-10am). Most vendors close by 2pm, and crowds get insane after 11.
• Bring CASH. Many small vendors don't take cards.
• Try the tamagoyaki (sweet egg) skewers — a perfect first taste of Japanese food for kids.
• Public bathrooms are limited — use the ones in Tsukiji Hongan-ji temple right next door.
• 5-minute walk from Tsukiji Station (Hibiya Line) or Tsukijishijo Station (Oedo Line).
• Booking a guided food tour with kids is HUGELY worth it — someone else navigates while you and the kids eat.
We pair this with Hama-rikyu Gardens (5 min walk) or a Sumida River cruise from nearby for a perfect Tokyo morning.
