Up to 3,000 people cross at once. It happens every 2 minutes. Your kids will think it's a video game come to life. Shibuya Crossing is the most famous intersection in the world for a reason — and crossing it once is a Tokyo bucket-list moment.
What makes it special: it's not just the crossing — it's the energy. Massive video screens loom overhead playing ads and J-pop. The Hachiko statue (the famous loyal dog) sits right at the entrance, perfect for a photo. The view from above (Shibuya Sky, Mag's Park rooftop, or the free Starbucks 2nd floor) makes the whole thing look like a synchronized dance.
Kid tips:
• Best for ALL ages, but TODDLERS PLUS LITTLE KIDS = HOLD HANDS TIGHTLY. The crowd is intense and fast-moving. Babywearing > stroller for the actual crossing.
• Cross it at least twice — once during the day to feel the chaos, once after dark when the lights are at full blast.
• The famous BIRD'S-EYE photo: the 2nd floor of the Starbucks (in Tsutaya Books) overlooks the crossing for FREE if you buy a drink. Bring it with you.
• BEST elevated view: Shibuya Sky (paid, top of the Scramble Square tower) at sunset.
• The Hachiko statue is at the West exit of Shibuya Station. Get the photo before crossing.
• Stroller-friendly station: take the elevator (look for the elevator-only signs).
• Public bathrooms: inside the station or at any nearby cafe.
• Pickpockets are EXTREMELY rare in Tokyo, but Shibuya is the one place where I'd say "keep bags zipped" — it's the most tourist-dense spot in the city.
We pair this with the Pokemon Center Shibuya, Shibuya Sky, and a stop at Hachiko statue — a perfect Shibuya 2-hour kid stop.
