Living in Chiang Mai isn’t just a postcard dream with palm trees—it’s affordable, fulfilling, and actually achievable. As of 2025, we are a couple living a comfortable yet simple lifestyle in Chiang Mai. This guide is based entirely on our real-life experience, breaking down our monthly costs in detail. Let’s dive in!

šŸ” Rent: Two-Story Villa with Garden – 11,000 THB/month

We live in a quiet neighborhood, slightly outside of Nimman, yet with easy access to the city center. Our home is a two-story villa in a gated community with a private garden. The space, natural light, and greenery make staying at home a joy. These kinds of villas typically range between 10,000–15,000 THB/month.

šŸ’” Extra Tip:
You can find more and even cheaper options in Facebook groups. Thai landlords are highly active on Facebook, often posting listings that never make it to property websites.

šŸ¢ Condos in Chiang Mai are usually located in the city center and come with facilities like gyms and pools, making them perfect for solo travelers or digital nomads.
šŸ” Villas, on the other hand, are ideal for families, couples, or pet owners who need more space and privacy.

šŸ›‘ Be sure to check utility rates before signing a contract—some rentals charge 7–10 baht/unit for electricity, which adds up!

šŸ›µ Transportation: Scooter Rental – 3,000 THB/month

Getting around Chiang Mai is easiest with a scooter. We rent ours long-term for 3,000 THB per month.

šŸ›¢ļø A full tank costs around 160 THB and lasts us nearly a full week of riding around the city.

šŸ’” Since traffic flows on the left side, it may take a day or two to adjust, but it’s worth it. And always wear a helmet!

šŸ›’ Markets & Groceries

We spend about 6,000 THB/month on groceries for two people. This covers fruits, vegetables, dry goods, and cooking basics. Daily essentials like milk and bread are usually picked up separately from nearby convenience stores.

Local markets are open every day of the week, which is one of the best things about Chiang Mai. Whether you want organic veggies or fresh herbs, you'll find them easily.

🄭 Mango Tip:
During the season (April–June), mangoes are sweet, juicy, and very affordable. Buy them from local market stalls for the best quality.

šŸŒ Global Cuisine: Once a Week – ~1,000 THB/for two

We love trying different types of food once a week. Here are our favorites:

šŸ› Indian Cuisine: Rich spices and hearty dishes—Butter chicken and garlic naan are our go-tos.
šŸ„™ Middle Eastern Cuisine: Humus Chiang Mai has amazing mezze plates. Falafel and mutabbal are must-tries.
šŸœ Korean & Japanese Cuisine: Korean BBQ spots are fun and filling. Japanese ramen and sushi are widely available and surprisingly authentic in Chiang Mai.

šŸ’ø Average cost for two people at these restaurants: ~1,000 THB.

šŸŽ¶ Entertainment: 2 Nights a Week

When it comes to nightlife, we’re regulars at Ostinato Bar, a unique spot owned by a friend.

šŸŽ¤ Ostinato is not your typical bar—it encourages musical expression. You can sing, play an instrument, or just sit back and enjoy as others take the stage. It has an intimate, community vibe that keeps us coming back.

Alcohol prices are reasonable:

  • Beer: 80–120 THB

  • Cocktails: 120–180 THB

Even if you don’t drink, the live performances and creative atmosphere are well worth a visit.
