Don’t Miss Out on these Dreamy Mountain Huts

One of the most unforgettable ways to experience Switzerland is by visiting its mountain huts. Here are three huts that belong on every adventurer’s bucket list:

Flühalp – Matterhorn Views Without the Crowds

Hidden above Zermatt, Flühalp is a rustic alpine hut that offers jaw-dropping views of the Matterhorn in total tranquility. Unlike Zermatt’s bustling streets, this hut feels remote and peaceful. You can hike up from Zermatt or from Sunnegga (accessible by funicular), making it a doable day trip or an unforgettable overnight stay.

  • Why it’s special: Sunset here is magic. As the light fades, the Matterhorn glows in fiery pink and orange hues, and you might just have the view to yourself once the day hikers head back down.

  • Good to know: Meals are hearty and traditional. Think mountain cheese, rösti, and hot soups. Accommodations are simple dorm-style, but the location makes every step worth it. We opted for the Matterhorn-view private room!

Schäfler Hut – Sunrise on the Ridges of Appenzell

Perched dramatically along the Schäfler ridge, this hut looks like it’s balanced on the edge of the world. The approach is steep but not technical, and many hikers combine it with the cable car to Ebenalp for a more manageable climb. Once you’re up there, the panorama is staggering. There are jagged peaks stretching out and rolling hills far below stretching into the horizon.

  • Why it’s special: Sunrise here is legendary. As the first light hits the ridges, clouds sometimes drift below you, giving the feeling of floating above the world.

  • Good to know: The hut offers dorm-style beds and warm mountain meals. Combine a stay here with the next hut below.

Aescher Hut – The Cliffside Icon

Aescher might be the most photographed hut in all of Switzerland, and for good reason. It is literally built into the side of a cliff in Appenzell! You can hike up from Wasserauen or take the Ebenalp cable car partway to make the journey easier. Though Aescher is no longer an overnight hut (it’s now a guesthouse and restaurant), it’s still a must-visit for the sheer “wow” factor.

  • Why it’s special: Sitting on the terrace with a plate of rösti and looking out over the Appenzell valley is one of those “this is why I came to Switzerland” moments. The hut is also just steps away from the Wildkirchli caves, which have fascinating history tied to hermits and prehistoric finds.

  • Good to know: Because of its popularity, Aescher can get busy during the day. If you want to avoid the crowds, go early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when most visitors have cleared out.

My biggest tip for why I love to stay in a mountain hut like Flüehlalp or Schäfler, it gives you access to off-peak. You’re able to soak in the quiet mornings and golden evenings that day-trippers miss. Even if you only do one hut on your trip, it will be one of the most authentic Swiss experiences you’ll ever have.
