Runde is one of the best places in Norway to see the adorable puffins up close. Besides puffins, you’ll find many other bird species nesting here. The puffins return from fishing on the open sea to their nests in the evenings during the breeding season.
You can reach Runde Island via a bridge from the mainland. If you’re traveling by campervan, be aware that wild camping is not allowed on the island. Instead, stay at Goksøyr Camping, the island’s only campsite.
From the campsite, the popular Bird Cliff (Lundeura Viewpoint) is about a 1-hour hike (2 km, 180 m elevation). Make sure to arrive in time to watch the puffins return. You won’t even need a camera with a zoom lens—these charming birds come really close! Just be sure to respect the barriers to protect the wildlife.
But it’s not just the puffins that make Runde special—the landscape here is stunning and pleasantly surprised me!
