Best Time to Visit Morocco
The real difference between seasons, weather and travel experiences
Laura Brühl
Morocco
One of the most important things to know before planning Morocco is that the country has multiple climates at once. The weather changes dramatically depending on:
season
altitude
coast vs desert
mountains vs cities
So the “best time” depends a lot on what kind of trip you want.
🌸 Spring (March - May)
The best overall season
Spring is honestly the most balanced and beautiful time to visit Morocco.
Temperatures are comfortable almost everywhere:
cities are warm but not unbearable
mountains are green
waterfalls have water
desert temperatures are manageable
Road trips during spring feel incredible because landscapes look alive after winter rains.
This is also one of the best times for:
hiking
photography
Atlas Mountains
valleys & canyons
The only downside:
it’s also a popular season, so famous places can become busier.
☀️ Summer (June – August)
Amazing for the coast, intense inland
Summer in Morocco can become EXTREMELY hot inland.
Cities like:
Marrakech
Fes
Ouarzazate
Merzouga
can feel exhausting during midday.
Desert temperatures especially can become very intense. Desert excursions during peak heat honestly aren’t enjoyable for everyone.
BUT:
coastal areas are fantastic in summer.
Places like:
Essaouira
Taghazout
Imsouane
stay much cooler because of the Atlantic breeze.
So summer works best if your trip focuses more on surfing, beaches and relaxed coastal travel.
🍂 AUTUMN (September – November)
Probably the best road trip season
Autumn is another amazing time for Morocco.
The extreme summer heat slowly disappears, but the weather still stays warm and pleasant.
This is one of the best times for:
desert trips
long drives
cities
hiking
photography
The lighting during autumn is also beautiful - softer, warmer and less harsh than summer.
For many travelers, autumn honestly feels like the perfect balance.
❄️ WINTER (December – February)
Very underrated - but colder than expected
Winter surprises many people.
The Sahara Desert during daytime can actually feel perfect:
sunny, calm and comfortable.
But nights become VERY cold - especially in desert camps and mountain regions.
The Atlas Mountains often get snow, which creates beautiful scenery but can also affect roads and accessibility.
Cities like Marrakech remain visitable in winter, but mornings and evenings can feel much colder than people expect.
Winter is great if:
you dislike extreme heat
want fewer tourists
love dramatic mountain landscapes
Just prepare properly for cold nights.
So when is the BEST time overall?
March-May & September-November
These months give the best balance between:
comfortable temperatures
beautiful landscapes
road trip conditions
enjoyable desert experiences
If possible, I would personally avoid peak summer for inland Morocco unless your trip is mainly coastal.
