Exploring the Albanian Coast
What to know before beach hopping the Albanian Riviera
Laura Brühl
Albania
1. Not all beaches are the same
The Albanian coast changes a lot depending on where you are:
Ksamil → small, turquoise, very busy
Himarë → more relaxed, bigger beaches
Dhërmi area → mix of stylish + natural
Hidden beaches → more effort, but quieter
Don’t expect every beach to look like Ksamil.
2. Timing is EVERYTHING
This is the biggest game changer:
Early morning → calm, clear water, almost empty
Midday → crowded, loud, expensive
Evening → best light, nicer vibe
Same beach = completely different experience
3. Beaches are often paid
Most beaches are managed by beach bars/restaurants:
Sunbeds are usually paid
Prices vary a lot (cheap → expensive in hotspots)
Free areas exist, but you often have to look for them
Especially true in Ksamil.
4. Water is incredible — but different
Very clear and clean almost everywhere
Often deep quite quickly
Many beaches = pebbles instead of sand
Water shoes can make a big difference.
5. The best beaches are not always easy to reach
Some of the nicest spots require:
driving on rough roads
walking down paths
a bit of effort
That’s why they’re less crowded.
6. Ksamil is beautiful… but intense
Ksamil is:
one of the most famous places
known for bright turquoise water
But also:
very crowded in summer
highly organized with sunbeds
Best tip: go early or only stay short
7. Himarë is a great base
Himarë is:
more relaxed
less crowded
a good starting point to explore nearby beaches
Ideal if you want a balance
8. Don’t chase only “Instagram beaches”
Some of the best moments are:
random stops along the coast
quieter, less famous beaches
simple spots with no setup
Not everything has to be “perfect” to be beautiful
9. Summer = high season energy
loud music at beach clubs
busy roads
limited parking
If you want calm → go early or travel in shoulder season
10. My honest takeaway
The Albanian coast is:
stunning
diverse
sometimes chaotic
If you adapt your expectations and timing, you’ll have a much better experience.
