Albania

Do I need a visa for Albania?

As an EU citizen, you don’t need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. You can enter with your ID card or passport. If you plan to stay longer, you must register with e-Albania within the first 30 days of entry.

What currency is used in Albania?

The official currency is the Albanian Lek (ALL). Euros are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, but not everywhere.

Tip: Always carry cash.

Is Albania expensive?

No - compared to most of Europe, Albania is still quite affordable.

  • Food: cheap to mid-range

  • Beaches: sunbeds vary (cheap to expensive in tourist hotspots like Ksamil)

  • Hotels: good value overall

Is it safe to travel in Albania?

Yes - Albania is considered very safe for tourists.

  • Even walking at night in cities is generally fine

  • Locals are known to be friendly and helpful

Do I need a car in Albania?

Not mandatory, but highly recommended.

Without a car:

  • limited access to beaches and nature spots

  • slower travel

With a car:

  • full flexibility

  • access to hidden places

How is driving a car in Albania?

The condition of the roads in Albania varies considerably. However, most routes and roads are relatively good. Driving in Albania is often somewhat challenging (especially in cities) but still manageable. Driving is a very good way to travel around the country. You can drive through Albania without paying tolls or a vignette; only some sections and tunnels require a toll.

When is the best time to visit?

  • May - June: best balance (good weather, fewer crowds)

  • July - August: very busy

  • September: still warm, but calmer

Is Albania good for solo travel?

Yes. It’s safe and relatively easy to travel alone, especially in coastal and tourist areas.

Do people speak English?

  • Yes in tourist areas

  • Less in rural villages

A few Albanian words can help a lot.

Do you give tip in Albania?

Tipping is not mandatory, but is considered a token of appreciation for good service. I recommend tipping around 10%.

Can I drink tap water here?

Tap water in Albania is generally undrinkable, as it contains a high level of chlorine. I therefore recommend using bottled or filtered water.

What type of power adapter do I need?

In Albania, sockets of type C and F are generally used. These correspond to those in most European countries.
