Theth Guide - Albania’s most famous mountain village
What to Expect & If It’s Worth It

Albania
Theth, a picturesque mountain village in the heart of the Albanian Alps, is a hiker’s paradise. Surrounded by towering peaks, the area offers easy and high alpine trails, the stunning Grunas Gorge and waterfalls, the charming village church, the Blue Eye lake, and enchanting glacier mills. With few locals left, you can fully enjoy its almost untouched nature.
Where is Theth?
Theth is located in northern Albania, deep in the Albanian Alps within Shkodër County. The village sits about 75 kilometers from Shkodër, but the scenic mountain drive takes around 2-3 hours due to winding roads.
Surrounded by dramatic peaks, forests, and clear rivers, Theth feels wonderfully remote. Despite its wild setting, it’s one of Albania’s most beautiful mountain destinations and a starting point for the famous Theth to Valbona hike. I love how peaceful it feels a small village completely embraced by nature.
Getting there
The road to Theth has improved a lot, but:
still winding mountain roads
takes time (don’t underestimate it)
not a “quick stop” destination
By car:
The best way to get there is from Shkodër, the nearest major city. The road is steep, winding, and partly unpaved, especially in the last few kilometers. With a standard rental car, getting to Theth is now relatively easy. Allow plenty of time for the journey – it can be challenging in bad weather or during the winter. The drive from Shkodër takes about 1.5 hours.
By Bus:
There are also several smaller buses that run to Theth from surrounding towns. It’s best to check online to find out where, when, and how you can get to Theth by bus.
Organized Tours:
Alternatively, you can book guided day trips or transfers from Shkodër. These often include stops for photos, short hikes and even local food. Tours are ideal for travelers who want to experience the beauty of Theth without having to worry about the challenging mountain road.
On Foot:
You can also undertake multi-day hikes to Theth from neighboring villages. The hike from Valbona, for example, is a popular choice. The routes lead through spectacular valleys, along mountain trails, and past waterfalls. This option is only suitable for experienced hikers and requires thorough preparation, knowledge of the weather, and appropriate equipment.

Theth Travel Tips
Bring cash – Theth does have an ATM, but the fees are high. It’s best to withdraw cash beforehand in Shkodër or en route.
Fill up your tank beforehand – There is no petrol station in the village, so plan on having enough fuel before you drive into the Albanian Alps.
Mobile phone & internet – Partially no signal, download maps offline.
Clothing and shoes – The paths are sometimes steep and unpaved. Hiking boots and weatherproof clothing are essential.
Drive carefully – the roads are often narrow, winding, and sometimes unpaved. Always drive carefully and thoughtfully.
Tap water – buy bottled water, especially on your first visit or if you are sensitive.
Respect nature – don’t litter, keep water sources clean. Theth is a pristine mountain village. Be respectful!
