Albania

1. Rent a car - it changes everything

Albania is not built for easy public transport travel. Buses exist, but they’re slow and don’t reach many of the best places.

If you want to see spots like Lake Bovilla, remote beaches, or mountain areas - a car gives you full freedom.

2. Cash only (very important)

Most of Albania still operates with cash only.

  • Restaurants, beach bars, parking, small shops = often cash only

  • Always carry Lek with you

  • Don’t rely fully on cards or ATMs in remote areas

3. International Driving Permit is recommended

An International Driving Permit is recommended for EU citizens, but not always mandatory.

  • Still helpful for car rentals

  • Makes things smoother with local agencies

  • Good backup if asked

4. Download offline maps

Mobile signal can be weak in:

  • mountains

  • valleys

  • remote coastal roads

Download Google Maps or Komoot offline before your trip - It helps a lot in places with no signal.

5. Learn a few Albanian words

Even small efforts go a long way:

  • mirëdita = good day

  • faleminderit = thank you

Especially appreciated in small villages - Locals are very warm when you try.

6. Get a local SIM card

Buy a SIM card locally or online from providers like Vodafone or One Albania.

  • Cheap data

  • Better coverage than roaming

  • Easy to get at airport or shops

7. Drive carefully

Driving can feel chaotic:

  • unpredictable traffic

  • narrow roads

  • different driving style

Stay alert and drive defensively - Especially in cities and mountain roads.

8. Wild camping is possible (but respectful)

Wild camping is generally tolerated.

  • Allowed in many natural areas

  • But always be respectful

  • Avoid private farmland and homes

Leave no trace is important!

9. Try authentic Albanian cuisine

Food is a big highlight:

  • byrek

  • tavë kosi

  • qofta

  • fresh seafood on the coast

  • traditional mountain dishes

Simple, hearty, and very local.

10. Beaches are often “managed”

Not fully public, not fully private.

  • You can access most beaches

  • But sunbeds are often paid

  • Especially in places like Ksamil

11. Timing matters more than location

Even the same beach feels completely different depending on time.

Morning = calm, empty, beautiful
Midday = crowded, noisy, stressful

12. Water shoes are underrated

Many beaches are:

  • pebbly

  • rocky

  • slippery

Water shoes make swimming much easier.

13. The best spots take effort

Some of the most beautiful places require:

  • short hikes

  • rough roads

  • or boat access

That’s part of what keeps them special.

14. Views > food (sometimes)

Many popular restaurants are chosen for:

  • sunsets

  • sea views

  • atmosphere

Food is usually good, but not always the main highlight.

15. It’s very safe

One of the most underrated things.

  • Safe even at night

  • Friendly, helpful locals

  • Very relaxed atmosphere overall

16. It’s not perfect - and that’s the charm

Things can feel:

  • unorganized

  • slow

  • a bit chaotic

But that’s exactly what makes it feel real and authentic.

✨ Final thought

Albania is a mix of raw nature, warm people, and slightly chaotic charm.
If you don’t expect perfection, you’ll probably love it more than you expect.
