One of the most iconic things to do in Budapest is visiting a thermal bath, but if you start looking into it, it can quickly get confusing. There are several famous options, and they all have slightly different vibes. If you’re only doing one, the best choice really depends on what kind of experience you want.

If you want the classic Budapest thermal bath experience, the one most people picture is Széchenyi Thermal Bath. It’s huge, iconic, and the outdoor pools are what make it so special. It’s the most famous option for a reason, and if it’s your first time in Budapest, it’s probably the easiest “safe choice.” The downside is that it can be very crowded, especially during peak times, and it definitely feels touristy.

If you want something that feels a bit more elegant and historic, Gellért Thermal Bath is a great option. The architecture is beautiful, and the interior has a more classic spa feel. It tends to feel a little more refined visually, but it’s usually less about the big outdoor social atmosphere and more about the setting.

Please note that Gellért Thermal Bath is currently under renovation. It’s best to check the official website before going.

If you want something a little more local-feeling or unique, Rudas Bath is often the one people love for its atmosphere. It has a more traditional character and is especially known for the rooftop hot pool with views over the Danube, which makes it a really special choice if you want something that feels a bit different from the more famous tourist-heavy options.

My honest advice: if it’s your first trip, go with Széchenyi if you want the iconic experience and don’t mind crowds. If you care more about beautiful interiors, choose Gellért. If you want something that feels a bit more special or atmospheric, especially with a view, Rudas is a great pick.

One important tip: go early if you can. Thermal baths are much more enjoyable before they get too crowded, and the whole experience feels calmer and more relaxing. Also, book ahead when possible, especially during weekends or high season.

If you’re only doing one bath in Budapest, there’s no wrong choice — it just depends on whether you want iconic, elegant, or more atmospheric.
