Medersa Ben Youssef is one of the most impressive historic landmarks in Marrakech and was once one of the largest Islamic schools in North Africa. Located in the Medina, it feels like stepping into a perfectly preserved piece of Moroccan history and craftsmanship.
The building is centered around a large inner courtyard with a reflective pool, surrounded by intricately decorated walls covered in zellige tiles, carved cedar wood, and detailed stucco work. Every surface feels carefully designed, creating a very symmetrical and peaceful atmosphere.
Former student rooms are small and simple, which contrasts strongly with the richness of the central courtyard - a reminder of how disciplined life once was in this religious school.
Today, it’s purely a cultural site and one of the most photographed places in Marrakech, especially because of its architectural detail and calm, almost spiritual atmosphere despite being in the middle of the busy city.
This is one of the absolute must-sees in Marrakech. It’s not about action or movement - it’s about standing still and taking in the detail. The craftsmanship is incredible, and it’s one of those places that feels even more impressive in real life than in photos.
