Akchour Waterfalls are one of the most breathtaking natural escapes in northern Morocco, located in the lush Talassemtane National Park near Chefchaouen. The experience is not just about the waterfalls themselves, but the entire journey to get there.

The hike starts in the small village of Akchour and immediately immerses you in a dramatic landscape of green valleys, rocky mountain walls and a flowing river that you’ll cross multiple times along the way. The trail follows the water almost the entire route, which makes the hike feel alive and constantly changing - sometimes you’re walking on narrow dirt paths above the river, other times you’re stepping across stones or walking directly through shallow water.

As you go deeper into the canyon, the scenery becomes more wild and impressive. Tall cliffs close in around you, birds echo through the valley, and the sound of rushing water gets louder. After a couple of hours, you reach the main waterfall: a powerful cascade dropping into a natural turquoise pool surrounded by rock formations. It feels hidden and untouched, especially if you arrive early in the day before crowds build up.

There are smaller pools and secondary waterfalls along the way, and many people stop for swimming or resting on the rocks. The water is extremely cold even in summer, but refreshing after the hike. Locals sometimes offer fresh drinks or simple food near resting points at the trailhead or along the lower sections.

What makes Akchour special is the combination of accessibility and raw nature. It’s not an easy “walk in the park,” but it’s also not a technical hike - it sits perfectly in between, making it achievable for most people with decent fitness. The biggest challenge is usually heat in summer and slippery rocks near the river crossings.

Despite becoming more popular in recent years, it still feels authentic and wild compared to many other tourist-heavy spots in Morocco. If you’re visiting Chefchaouen, this is one of the most rewarding day trips you can do.
