The Museum of Fine Arts, known locally as the Szépművészeti Múzeum, is one of the most important art museums in Hungary. It houses an impressive collection of European art from ancient to modern times, including works by Raffael, El Greco, Goya, Renoir, Monet, Picasso, and many others. The collection is organized across multiple galleries with standout sections dedicated to Egyptian antiquities, classical sculpture, Italian Renaissance, Dutch Golden Age, and 19th–20th century European painting and sculpture. Temporary special exhibitions regularly bring international shows to Budapest, making every visit different. The grand museum building itself, facing Heroes’ Square and City Park, adds to the experience with its spacious halls and classical architecture.
Honest tip:
This museum is a serious stop for art lovers — if you enjoy classic European art, it’s one of Budapest’s best cultural attractions. However, it can feel a bit intimidating for casual visitors due to its size and depth, so plan enough time (at least 2–3 hours) if you want to appreciate the highlights. For a shorter visit, focus on one section — Renaissance or 19th‑century French works — rather than trying to see everything at once.
