Durrës is one of Albania’s oldest and most important coastal cities, combining a busy urban feel with long stretches of beach along the Adriatic Sea. It’s a place where history and everyday life sit side by side - from Roman ruins in the city center to the beach and the promenade.
The city has a very mixed vibe: parts feel lively and touristy, especially in summer near the coastline, while other areas are more local and everyday. The main draw is definitely the beach promenade, which comes alive in the evenings with cafés, restaurants and people walking along the water.
Durrës is not the most “beautiful” or curated destination in Albania, but it’s practical, accessible, and has its own charm. It works well as a quick stop, a beach base near Tirana, or a starting point for exploring the coast. However, if you’re looking for crystal-clear water or aesthetic coastal towns, the southern Riviera is more impressive.
