The highest dune of Erg Chebbi is one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Moroccan Sahara, rising above the vast sea of golden sand near Merzouga. Reaching the top is a small challenge, but the reward is an endless panoramic view over rolling dunes that shift in shape and color throughout the day.
The climb itself is simple but physically demanding - soft sand makes every step feel heavier, especially under the sun. Most people go barefoot or with light shoes, and it usually takes around 20–40 minutes depending on pace. There is no marked trail, so you simply follow footprints and natural ridgelines.
Once at the top, the silence is striking. You can see dune after dune stretching toward the horizon, with light constantly changing the landscape from deep orange to soft gold and pink tones, especially during sunrise or sunset. It’s one of the most atmospheric moments you can experience in the Sahara.
Best come here either early in the morning or in the evening, when temperatures are cooler and the light is at its most dramatic.
Bring water (even short climbs are exhausting)
Avoid midday heat
