Matthias Church, officially the Church of Our Lady, is a Gothic masterpiece dating back to the 14th century, located in the Buda Castle District. Its colorful Zsolnay tile roof and intricate spires are iconic features visible across Budapest. Inside, the church boasts elaborate frescoes, stained glass windows, and a richly decorated altar, reflecting centuries of Hungarian art and history. The church has hosted royal coronations, weddings, and state events, and today also functions as a venue for classical concerts, adding to its cultural significance. Visitors can explore both the church interior and the adjacent Fishermen’s Bastion terrace, which offers breathtaking views over the Danube and Pest.

Honest tip:
Entrance is paid. The Fishermen’s Bastion terrace nearby is free. Avoid peak tourist hours (midday) for a quieter visit.

Tickets: Adults: HUF 2,000–3,000 (€5–8).
