The Hungarian State Opera House is one of Budapest’s architectural gems. Built in 1884–1885 in neo‑Renaissance style, it features an opulent interior with marble staircases, gilded decorations, frescoed ceilings and luxurious boxes. The house hosts opera, ballet, and classical music performances, and guided tours are available for visitors who want to explore its history and design without attending a show. Even if you don’t go inside for a performance, a walk around the exterior and the main foyer offers a taste of Budapest’s rich cultural heritage.

Honest tip:
Tickets for guided tours or performances can be booked in advance online or at the box office. The opera is beautiful but can be pricey, especially for performances; however, even just the architecture and interior alone make a visit worthwhile.
