Berat is one of Albania’s most beautiful and atmospheric cities, known for its white Ottoman houses, cobbled streets and stunning hillside setting along the Osum River. Often called the “City of a Thousand Windows,” this UNESCO-listed town is full of charm, history and incredible viewpoints. The old neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica are perfect for wandering slowly, while Berat Castle offers some of the best panoramic views in the city. Unlike many castles, this one still feels alive, with small streets, historic churches, and homes inside the fortress walls. Berat is the kind of place best enjoyed slowly - with sunset views, a relaxed evening atmosphere, and plenty of time to explore its historic corners.
Stay at least one night if you can - Berat feels especially beautiful in the evening once the day-trippers are gone. The castle and upper viewpoints are best visited later in the day for softer light and the best atmosphere.
Expect cobbled streets and some uphill walking
