The West Thumb Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park is the largest geyser basin on the shores of Yellowstone Lake. It was the first Yellowstone feature to be written about in a publication, with trapper Daniel T. Potts describing the area's hot springs and sulfur vents in 1827. Visitors used to arrive at West Thumb by stagecoach or steamship, but the development was removed in the 1980s to protect the scenic beauty. Highlights include Abyss Pool, known for its deepness, and Fishing Cone, where visitors used to cook fish in the hot spring.
