Seeing kangaroos in the wild is one of those classic Australia moments. From white sand beaches in WA to sunrise wildlife moments in Queensland and coastal headlands in NSW, these spots will give you that unforgettable Aussie postcard moment.

1. Lucky Bay, Western Australia

If there’s one place that belongs at the top of this list, it’s Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park. This is the famous beach where kangaroos regularly relax right on the bright white sand with the most unreal turquoise water behind them. It’s one of the most photogenic wildlife encounters in Australia and feels almost too perfect to be real. Tourism Australia specifically calls it one of the most photogenic kangaroo spots in the country.

Best time to visit: early morning or sunset
Tip: they’re usually easiest to spot near the campground end of the beach in the early morning or evening.

2. Look At Me Now Headland, New South Wales

This is one of the best places in NSW to reliably see kangaroos with ocean views. Located at Emerald Beach near Coffs Harbour, the grassy clifftop headland is home to a large group of eastern grey kangaroos that are often just casually hanging out overlooking the coastline.

What makes this spot so special is how easy it is to access. It’s a short walk from the car park and gives you those beautiful coastal NSW views at the same time, which makes it such an easy stop on an east coast road trip.

Best time to visit: sunrise or late afternoon
Tip: stay on the paths and give them space as they often rest close to the walking trail.

3. Cape Hillsborough, Queensland

Cape Hillsborough is one of the most unique kangaroo experiences in Australia because the kangaroos and wallabies come down onto the beach at sunrise. Sunrise is by far the best time, and this is the reason most people visit the area. This spot is quite popular among tourists to be warned it can get quite crowded.

Best time to visit: sunrise only
Tip: stay nearby the night before so you don’t miss the early morning window.

Final Tip

For the best chance of seeing kangaroos, always visit around sunrise or sunset, keep a respectful distance, and never feed them. These are wild animals, and the best moments happen when you simply let them do their thing.
