Australia

Australia is huge, and road trips here are an adventure like no other. The right apps, plus a few offline strategies, will make your journey smoother, safer, and more fun.

1. WikiCamps Australia — Campsites & Stopovers (Non-Negotiable!)

Best for: Finding campsites, caravan parks, rest areas, toilets, water, and dump points.

WikiCamps is hands down one of Australia’s must-have road trip apps. It’s a paid app, but absolutely worth it. The cost is tiny compared to the stress and time it saves finding campsites, dump points, and amenities across the country. WikiCamps offers crowdsourced info on thousands of sites across every state and territory. You can filter by amenities, cost, and location, and it works offline once maps are downloaded. You can also check reviews left by recent travellers to get the most up to date information.

WikiCamps is essential for planning your stops and avoiding last minute headaches.

2. CamperMate — All-Around Road Trip Companion

Best for: Planning stops, locating points of interest, and offline maps.
CamperMate is similar to WikiCamps, and sometimes it's worth having 2 camping apps instead of 1 incase one app has spots the other doesn't. Campermate combines campsites, practical essentials like toilets, dump stations, Wi-Fi spots, and supermarkets, all in one app. You can save favourites and plan routes, even when you’re offline. Perfect for road trips of any length.

3. Fuel Map Australia — Fuel Stops & Price Finder

Best for: Saving money on fuel and planning long driving days.
Fuel Map Australia shows petrol stations and current fuel prices across the country which is invaluable in regional or remote areas where service stations are far apart and the price of fuel can fluctuate dramatically. You can filter by fuel type and plan refuelling stops strategically to help save on costs.

4. Navigation & Maps

I personally always use Google Maps for planning drives, checking distances, and downloading offline map areas. It’s reliable, easy to use, and works almost everywhere in Australia.

If you’re heading into remote regions or areas with patchy mobile reception, Maps.me is an excellent alternative. You can download entire regions, follow GPS routes offline, and explore off the beaten track destinations without worrying about losing signal which is perfect for long stretches of road in the Outback, WA, or Tasmania.

5. Rexby — Curated Travel Guides

Best for: Following creator-made itineraries and mapped stops

If you haven’t already downloaded the Rexby app, make sure you do instead of just viewing it in your browser. This way, you have everything available offline. You can keep track of must see stops and follow mapped routes without worrying about missing anything. It works perfectly alongside WikiCamps and Google Maps for a smoother, more organised road trip.

6. BOM Weather — Local Forecasts & Alerts

Weather changes quickly in Australia, from heatwaves to storms or bushfire alerts. BOM Weather keeps you informed so you can adjust your plans and travel safely.

7. AllTrails — Hiking & Outdoor Activities

If your road trip includes exploring waterfalls, national parks, or bushland trails, AllTrails offers trail maps, elevation data, and reviews so you can find great hikes wherever you stop.

8. Entertainment & Offline Essentials

Long drives often mean hours on the road without mobile signal. These apps help you stay entertained:

  • Video streaming services (Netflix, Stan, Disney+): Download movies and shows before leaving cities. All services require a paid subscription.

  • Spotify, Apple Music, Audible: Download playlists, albums, and podcasts for offline use.

Pro Tip: Spend 10–15 minutes in a city before heading out to download all content you might need for the next few days.

9. Emergency+ — Safety & Emergency Info

This official app lets you call emergency services with your GPS coordinates. Essential for remote areas and outback road trips.

Tips for Using Road Trip Apps Effectively

  • Download offline maps and guides before leaving cell coverage.

  • Use a combination of apps (e.g., WikiCamps + Google Maps + Rexby). This ensures you have everything covered as no single app can do everything.

  • Keep apps updated for the latest campsite info, fuel prices, and maps.
