Osaka, Japan

In Osaka, the go-to card is the ICOCA card, which works seamlessly across the city and all over Japan. As I'm writing this tips in March 2024, unlike SUICA and PASMO cards in Tokyo there does not seem to be an ICOCA card shortage in Osaka so they are readily available from the light blue ticket vending machines at JR stations.

It is similar to the SUICA and PASMO cards in Tokyo. Here’s everything you need to know:

What Is ICOCA?

  • ICOCA stands for “Shall we go?” in Japanese.

  • It’s issued by JR West, the national train company in the Kansai region (which includes Osaka).

  • ICOCA cards are valid not only in Osaka but also throughout Japan.

Where to Buy ICOCA Cards:

  1. JR Stations: You can purchase ICOCA cards from the light blue colored vending machines at JR stations in Osaka and other parts of Kansai. These machines have English-language screen guidance for easy use.

  2. Kansai International Airport (KIX): If you’re arriving at KIX, you can also buy ICOCA cards there.

How to Use ICOCA:

  • Transport: Use your ICOCA card for trains, subways, and buses in Osaka. It’s a convenient way to pay your fare by tapping to go in and tapping again to go out.

  • Shops: Many shops, especially convenience stores, accept ICOCA for purchases.

  • Other Regions: You can also use ICOCA in other parts of Japan.

Usually you can tap your ICOCA card even if you leave it in your wallet or handbag and put it over the reader. Sometimes it wont read however and you may have to take it out.

How much is the ICOCA card?

You can buy one for as little as 1000 yen (adult/child). This includes 500 yen of credit. Before you leave Japan, you can bring the used card to a ticket office in the JR West Area (Osaka, Kansai, etc) and they will refund the deposit, minus a small service charge.

How do you top up a ICOCA card?

It’s very easy to top up your ICOCA / Pasmo / Suica IC Card at vending machines. You top up your cards at any subway station in Osaka but make sure you have cash with you.

Can I top up a ICOCA card with credit card?

A credit card cannot be used to load a PASMO, ICOCA or SUICA card.

IC cards are like prepaid cards and as such can only be recharged with cash.

Are there child ICOCA cards?

Yes. And, if your children use children’s cards, they will automatically be charged children’s fares when using trains, subways and buses. Children's cards can be purchased from the JR ticket office upon sighting of your child's passport.

Should I buy a ICOCA card?

ICOCA cards make exploring Osaka and the rest of Japan hassle-free. So, grab one and enjoy your travels! 🚆🗺️

Remember: Even if you’re just visiting for a few days, getting an ICOCA card is a smart move. Say goodbye to wasting time and fumbling for change and hello to smooth train rides! 🌟
