Practical Advice to Make the Most of Your Visit
Paris is home to some of the world’s most famous museums and monuments. Visiting these sites can be overwhelming without a plan, so this overview provides practical advice to help you make the most of your time, avoid unnecessary stress, and enjoy your cultural experience to the fullest.
Book your tickets in advance
Always buy tickets from the official website before your visit. This guarantees your entry and saves time. Popular museums and monuments, like the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, often sell out. If you don’t book ahead, access may be denied.
Arrive early
Be at the venue at least 30 minutes before your ticket time slot. Security lines can take time, and if you arrive late, you may be refused entry even with a valid ticket.
Respect the last entry time
Most museums and monuments stop admitting visitors one hour before closing. Arriving after this cut-off means you will not be allowed inside. Always plan a buffer to avoid disappointment.
Closure days and holidays
All museums and monuments are closed on January 1, May 1, and December 25. Some also close on a fixed weekday (for example, the Louvre on Tuesdays and the Musée d’Orsay on Mondays). In addition, national holidays may affect opening hours. Common closure days include:
1 January – New Year’s Day
Easter Sunday and Monday
1 May – Labor Day
8 May – WWII Victory Day
14 July – Bastille Day
15 August – Assumption Day
1 November – All Saints’ Day
11 November – Armistice Day
25 December – Christmas Day
26 December – Boxing Day (not universal, but some closures)
Always check the official website for the most up-to-date opening times.
Free entry for students and youth
EU residents under 26, including students, enjoy free access to national museums and monuments. Bring your valid ID or student card as proof.
Free first Sundays
On the first Sunday of each month, many museums open free of charge—perfect for budget travelers. Check individual museum websites for details.
Closed on Mondays or Tuesdays
Several major museums close on fixed weekdays. The Louvre is closed on Tuesdays, while the Musée d’Orsay is closed on Mondays. Always double-check before you go.
Security and bags
Expect airport-style security checks at entrances. Large bags, backpacks, or luggage are not permitted inside most museums and monuments.
Night visits
Some museums offer evening openings, such as the Louvre on Fridays and Centre Pompidou on select nights. These provide a more relaxed atmosphere.
Museum passes
If you plan to visit several sites, the Paris Museum Pass is worth considering. It provides free entry to more than 50 museums and monuments and lets you skip ticket lines.
Photography rules
Photography is usually allowed in permanent collections, but flash and tripods are forbidden. Some temporary exhibits may ban photos altogether, so always check for signs.
Rest and recharge
Museums like the Louvre are vast and can take hours to explore. Wear comfortable shoes and plan breaks.
