The most popular attraction in France is the Gothic masterpiece Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. Its construction started in the Middle Ages (13th-15th century). The Cathedral, which was severely damaged during the French Revolution, underwent restoration work in the 19th century under the direction of the architect Viollet-le-Duc. The towers, spire, gargoyles, rose windows, and other architectural features are all admired by a large number of visitors.
