What you'll do

Day 1

If you arrive at Fiumicino airport, you can take the Leonardo Express to arrive fast and easily at Termini Station, Rome's central station. The journey will take a little more than 30 minutes and the ticket costs €14.

Don't forget to valite your ticket, otherwise you'll get a fine. If you have a physical ticket there are machines on the platform (usually at the beginning) and if you have an online ticket from this year you need to validate it as well.

Cheaper alternatives to reach the centre are:

  • Take the regional train from Fiumicino airport to Termini (50 minutes, the ticket is €8, but you'll need to change train at Rome Trastevere station)

  • The bus is cheaper, around €6

Depending on availability and your budget, these hotels are a great option if you want to have an unforgettable stay in Rome.

If none of these hotels are available when you'll visit Rome, make sure to find something within the same area. It's the historic center and prices are a bit higher than other areas, but you'll have a few advantages: you'll be immersed in Rome's beauties, have amazing restaurants and bars nearby, you won't need to rely on public transport often and everything you want to visit is just a short walk away

Hidden gem in Rome

One of Rome's hidden gems is the Galleria Doria Pamphilj. Located in the palace of the same name, the gallery has been home to the renowned art collection of the Doria Pamphilj family for hundreds of years. Visitors can explore the stunning Baroque and Renaissance architecture and marvel at the exquisite paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries that fill the premises. One of the highlights of this museum is the masterful Portrait of Innocent X, painted by Diego Velázquez. It's also home of works from Caravaggio, Tiziano, Raffaello, Carracci and Bernini. The "Galleria degli Specchi" alone is worth a visit here, I was amazed by its beauty! I found the visit to be super interesting and fascinating. If you love art like I do, Galleria Doria Pamphilj is such a great place to visit. The gallery is opened from Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 7 pm and from Friday to Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm.

Villa Aldobrandini

park

Hidden oasis in Rome

Villa Aldobrandini is a hidden green escape tucked away in the middle of Rome. It was once much larger, stretching all the way to the Quirinale Palace; however, the villa was shortened and its gardens remodeled when Termini station was built in the 19th century.

To enter the park you can ascend the short staircase to access the park and find a spacious array of trees, statues (many without heads!), and shady areas. The best part of visiting the site is the incredible views from its elevated position above the city. A trip to Villa Aldobrandini is an unexpected treat and a relaxing haven in the center of bustling Rome.

The entrance of the park is in Via Mazzarino.

Colosseo

culture

Iconic symbol of Roman Empire

The Colosseum needs no introduction; it is one of the most iconic landmarks in Italy and arguably the world. Ranked as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Colosseum is truly one of Rome's most beautiful monuments and an absolute must-see.

For me, it remains one of those landmarks that I will never tire of seeing. I love searching for new details and perspectives to observe it. Currently, my favorites are from the Giardinetto del Monte Oppio and from the Terrace of the Altare della Patria (both are in this guide and free).

Visiting the interior is certainly an interesting experience, although in my opinion, it's more impressive from the outside. Of course, I recommend going inside if you can secure tickets, with a Colosseum ticket, you can also access the Roman Forum and explore a fascinating part of Ancient Rome. If you can't get inside, fortunately, Rome has a thousand plenty of gorgoeus monuments and palaces to see :)

It also includes a museum dedicated to Italian unification, an elevators which provides access to the roof, and 243 external staircases. You can either sit or take your drink at the counter, and even if you buy something at the counter, you can still enjoy the view from their terrace.
