This hike to Avalanche Lake via Algonquin Peak was one of the most demanding hikes Iâve done in the Adirondacksâand we definitely felt it in our legs the next day. Itâs a long and strenuous route, with over 1200 m of elevation gain and steep sections that never really let up. You move through massive rock formations, scramble up very steep terrain, and even climb ladders in a few exposed sections. The effort is intense, but the views from the summit are absolutely worth it. One of my favorite moments was reaching Avalanche Lake, where you walk along wooden bridges right beside the waterâquiet, peaceful, and a total contrast to the tough climb.
This is a hike that requires good preparation: start early, bring plenty of water, food, and snacks, and be ready for rapid weather changes, as temperatures can drop quickly at higher elevations. Some parts of the trail are not clearly marked, so downloading an offline map in advance is strongly recommended. Itâs a serious adventure, but if youâre experienced and well prepared, itâs an unforgettable one.
