Dhobi Ghat is an open-air laundry in Mumbai, India, where washermen known as dhobis work to clean clothes and linens from hotels and hospitals. It was built in 1890 and has rows of concrete wash pens with flogging stones. Considered the world's largest outdoor laundry, it attracts many tourists. The Dhobi Kalyan & Audhyogik Vikas Cooperative Society estimates an annual turnover of around Rs 100 crore. Over 7,000 people work here daily, washing over 100,000 clothes. Some dhobis have upgraded to mechanical machines for cleaning. The occupation has been passed down through generations in this area, home to around 200 families.
