The starting point for the classic hike to the Augstmatthorn is on the back side of the Brienzergrat on the Lombachalp not far from Habkern.

Due to the fantastic panorama that awaits you up here, the Augstmatthorn has become an increasingly popular wild camping spot in recent years - to the great annoyance of the local gamekeepers. The area between Lombachalp and Augstmatthorn is part of a hunting ban area with integral protection regulations and in such areas wild camping is expressly forbidden.

We did the hike to the Augstmatthorn from Lombachalp. You can get there directly by car or by bus.

The hiking trail leads steadily uphill across alpine pastures and the moorland along the north-facing mountain flanks of the Brienzergrat towards the ridge. From the Augstmatthorn you have a wonderful view over the Brienzergrat to the Brienzer Rothorn. At the same time, the narrow path winding along the ridge towards Suggiture makes you want to hike on. Deep views down to Lake Brienz - wide views into the Bernese Alps but also into the Emmental and Entlebuch. Duration: 2:30h Ascent: 600m Descent: 600m Distance: 5.2km

Photography tips: It's so fantastic that actually on the ridge you have a fantastic view in both sides. Especially magic it is when you arrive for golden hour or sunset (but you will have to walk back down i nthe dark (it's approximately 50min)
