1. When to Travel to Patagonia

  • Best overall time: November to April
Warmer temperatures, longer daylight hours, and the best season for hiking, road trips, and outdoor activities.

  • December to February (Summer / Peak Season)
Best weather, vibrant atmosphere, and full access to trails and tours. Ideal for first-time visitors. Book early.

  • March to April (Fall)
One of the most beautiful times to visit. Fewer crowds, autumn colors, cooler temperatures, and great conditions for photography.

  • September to November (Spring)
Flowers blooming, fewer tourists, but weather can still be unpredictable and windy.

My Recommendation

If you love hiking and adventure: December to March
If you want fewer crowds + stunning scenery: March to April

2. How to Get to Patagonia

  • By Plane (Best Option)
The fastest and easiest way to reach Patagonia is by flying from Buenos Aires or Santiago. Main airports include:

    • El Calafate (Argentina) – Best for Perito Moreno Glacier and El Chaltén

    • Ushuaia (Argentina) – Best for Tierra del Fuego

    • Puerto Natales (Chile) – Best for Torres del Paine

    • Punta Arenas (Chile) – Great gateway to southern Patagonia

  • By Bus
A popular and budget-friendly option between Patagonia towns. Buses connect destinations like El Calafate, El Chaltén, Puerto Natales, and Torres del Paine.

  • By Car
Perfect for road trips and flexibility. Renting a car allows you to explore scenic routes, hidden spots, and travel at your own pace.

  • Crossing Between Argentina & Chile
Many travelers combine both sides of Patagonia. Border crossings are common, but always check visa requirements and schedules in advance.

Recommended Routes

  • Buenos Aires → El Calafate → El Chaltén

  • Santiago → Puerto Natales → Torres del Paine

My Recommendation

If you have around 10 days, fly into El Calafate or Puerto Natales, rent a car, and combine El Chaltén + Torres del Paine. It’s an incredible route that lets you experience some of the best hiking, scenic drives, glaciers, and iconic landscapes in Patagonia.

3. How to Get Around El Calafate, El Chaltén & Torres del Paine

By Bus (Most Common Option)

The easiest and most budget-friendly way to travel between El Calafate, El Chaltén, and Torres del Paine National Park is by bus.

  • Regular routes connect El Calafate and El Chaltén (3–4 hours)

  • Buses run from El Calafate to Puerto Natales (to Torres del Paine)

  • From Puerto Natales, you can take a bus directly into the park

This is the most popular option for backpackers and independent travelers.

By Car (Best for Flexibility)

Renting a car gives you the most freedom to explore Patagonia at your own pace.

  • Drive between El Calafate and El Chaltén on a paved scenic road

  • Stop at viewpoints, lakes, and hidden spots along the way

  • Ideal for travelers who want flexibility and fewer schedule constraints

My Recommendation

For El Chaltén, renting a car is not necessary since most hikes are accessible directly from town and buses are very convenient. However, if rental prices are reasonable and you want extra flexibility, having a car can still be a great option.

For Torres del Paine National Park, renting a car is highly recommended. Transportation between different areas of the park is limited, distances are long, and having your own vehicle makes exploring much easier and far more flexible.

4. Currency Exchange in Argentina

Argentina has multiple exchange rates, and this can be confusing for first-time visitors.

In recent years, foreign Credit Cards payments in Argentina have become much more favorable for tourists.

When paying with an international card, travelers often receive an exchange rate closer to the market rate instead of the official government rate.

Throughout my trip to Argentina, I had no trouble paying with my credit card; every store accepted it, and I never needed to exchange dollars for Argentine pesos.
