Should I rent a car in Portugal?

Whether you should rent a car in Portugal depends heavily on your itinerary. If you plan to primarily stay in major cities like Lisbon and Porto, public transportation is generally efficient and convenient, making a car less necessary and potentially a hassle due to parking and traffic. However, if you intend to explore smaller towns, coastal areas, or the countryside, a rental car is highly recommended for greater flexibility and access.

Portugal has excellent public transportation options, making it easy to get around without a car. Trains and buses connect major cities and towns, while trams, metros, and even ferries are available for local travel. For exploring beyond the main routes, consider renting a car or motorbike.

Trains:

  • A good railway network connects major cities and towns.

  • Alfa Pendular (high-speed) and Intercidades (express) trains are efficient for long distances.

  • Regional trains are useful for shorter trips and connecting to smaller towns.

Buses:

  • Buses are a great option for exploring smaller towns and villages, especially those not served by trains.

  • Rede Expressos is a major bus operator with a wide network.

  • Be aware that some routes may have limited schedules, especially on weekends.

Local Transportation:

  • Trams, metros, and buses are available in Lisbon and Porto.

  • Ferries can be used to cross rivers and visit islands.

Other Options:

  • Walking and cycling are enjoyable ways to explore certain areas.

  • Uber and Bolt are available in major cities.

  • Consider guided tours for specific destinations or experiences.

Tips for Traveling Without a Car:

  • Plan your itinerary to include destinations accessible by public transportation.

  • Utilize online resources to check train and bus schedules.

  • Consider purchasing a transit pass for convenient travel within cities.

  • Be prepared for slower travel times on buses, especially in rural areas.
