Liberdade Square is an iconic square located in Santo Ildefonso parish, in the lower town of Porto, Portugal. A center of political, economical, and social activity in Porto for centuries, the square has origins dating back to the 18th century when it was initially limited by the medieval walls of the city and by urban palaces, which are now all lost. Today, visitors can find many noteworthy sights on Liberdade Square - from the imposing Neoclassical façade of the Cardosas Palace that dominates the south side of the square, to the Monument dedicated to King Peter IV in the middle of the square, and the surrounding buildings and avenues occupied by banks, hotels, restaurants, and offices. Whether you're a historian looking to learn more about the square's past or a traveler looking for something unique to explore, Liberdade Square offers something for everyone.
