The cutest camper van & a 4WD you're actually allowed to go off-road with.
Letās be real ā road tripping is the ultimate Aussie experience.
If you're dreaming of wide open roads, kangaroos hopping by, beach sunsets and spontaneous detours ā you're dreaming of a road trip. And thereās no better way to explore Australiaās wild beauty than behind the wheel, with freedom as your co-pilot.
So your best option is to buy or rent one. Weāve done both:
For our big lap around Australia, we bought and later sold our 4WD ā an incredible way to fully dive in.
But for shorter trips, you might be better off renting one. On our second trip, we found the cutest Retro Kombi RV and had the time of our lives cruising from the Gold Coast to Noosa to Byron Bay and back. First time in an old-timer and honestly⦠we loved it.š¤š
It looked amazing, felt dreamy, and the owner is super sweet and helpful too! Here's the link if you want to sneak a peek:

Now ā if you're craving that rugged, off-grid, sand-between-the-tires kind of fun ā we highly recommend going for a 4WD! But most 4WD rentals wonāt let you actually go off-road or drive on the beach⦠which kinda defeats the point.
Thatās why we went with Frontier Tourers. Their trucks are absolute beasts ā and yes, youāre allowed to drive them where the real adventures are. Here's also the link to their page:

We took one for a wild trip to KāGari (Fraser Island) and it was one of the most unforgettable travel moments of our lives. Crystal clear lakes, wild dingoes, sandy trails ā pure magic. Seriously, it's a once-in-a-lifetime trip every traveller should experience.
So⦠ready to start the road trip youāll still be telling stories about decades from now? āļø
