The Copland Track to Welcome Flat Hut is one of those hikes that sticks with you, tucked away in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, it’s got a bit of everything. Forest, mountains, a bright blue river, and the cherry on top, a natural hot pools right next to the hut.

The trail is about 18 km one way and takes around 6–8 hours each way depending on your pace. It’s a solid intermediate tramp with around 720 m of elevation gain, and while there aren’t any huge climbs, you’ll definitely feel it by the end of the day, especially with a big overnight pack.

The track follows the Copland River through lush, mossy forest and crosses a bunch of swing bridges (some of them are super long and a bit wobbly but fun). The views along the way are proper stunning, glacier-fed river, towering cliffs, waterfalls, and native bush. It’s also well-marked with orange triangles the whole way, so route finding isn’t a problem.

When you reach Welcome Flat Hut, you’re greeted with one of the best hut setups in the country. It sleeps 31 people across four rooms, has mattresses, flush toilets, and even a hut warden who stays there year-round. The real treat though, is the natural hot pools right next to the hut, perfect after a long day on the trail. Just be warned, the sandflies here are next level, especially around the pools, so bring repellent and cover up when you’re not soaking.

It costs $30 per person per night, and you do need to book ahead, especially during summer when it fills up fast.

Keep in mind, the West Coast weather can be wild, and rivers here rise fast. At the very start of the trail, there’s a river crossing,  on a good day, it’s just ankle-deep, but after rain, it can be dangerous. There’s a high-water track with a bridge you can use if needed, so always check the conditions before you head off.

And don’t forget to look out for the cheeky kea at the car park, they love a good rummage around vans.

All up, this is one of my favourite overnight hikes in the country. Between the views, the forest, the swing bridges, the river, and those hot pools, it’s a real West Coast gem. Your legs will feel the 36 km return, but it’s 100% worth it.
