Embark on this stunning 6.3-km out-and-back trail near Meskla, a moderately challenging yet rewarding hike. This scenic route takes you through the lesser-known but breathtaking Sarakina Gorge, a natural wonder with dramatic limestone slopes and lush vegetation of plane trees and cypresses.

The trail begins in the picturesque village of Meskla, one of the greenest areas in Chania, surrounded by orange groves, dense forests, and abundant water sources.

From here, you’ll follow a dirt road before transitioning into a rocky path along the riverbed. The highlight of the hike is the narrowest section of the gorge, where towering cliffs rise just a few meters apart, creating an awe-inspiring passage.

Steeped in local history, the gorge is believed to have been a hiding place for Saracens in ancient times. The striking rock formations appear as though they have been split apart, sculpted by nature into an extraordinary landscape.

After exiting the gorge, continue your hike through a serene forest towards the village of Zourva, following well-marked signs. The return journey takes you along a peaceful road with panoramic views, eventually leading back to Meskla. Despite being just a short drive from Chania, this hike transports you into a completely different world of untouched nature and tranquility.

For easy access, park your car in front of the Panagia Church in Meskla, where a spacious parking area is available.

From there, walk a few minutes up the road to the gorge entrance. You can either descend via a dirt road, turning left onto a cement road before entering the gorge, or take the right path directly into the gorge and hike upwards before reconnecting with the cement road. The gorge itself is small, taking approximately 20 minutes to traverse, but the impressive rock formations make every step worthwhile.

Do not confuse this gorge with the Sarakina Gorge in east Crete.
