Poiana Ponor (Ponor Glade) is undoubtedly one of the most iconic, photogenic, and fascinating places in the Apuseni Natural Park, located in the heart of the Padiș karst plateau.

A hike here isn't just a walk in an ordinary meadow, but an encounter with a spectacular geological phenomenon.

The magic of the place lies in its hydrology. The waters draining from the surrounding forested slopes gather into a river that winds through the middle of the glade. At the far end, the river hits a rock wall and mysteriously disappears underground through a "sorb" (a water loss orifice, called a ponor). During periods of heavy rain or snowmelt, a temporary lake forms in Poiana Ponor.

The main starting point is the "La Grajduri" (Glăvoi) camping area, where you can arrive by car (on a rather rough forest road, but drivable in summer by most cars with slightly higher ground clearance).

It's an accessible walk for families too, but requires appropriate footwear.

GSM signal is very weak or non-existent in the glade and in most of the Padiș area. Download offline maps before arriving there.

A hike in Poiana Ponor is a mandatory experience if you arrive in Apuseni. It is the perfect place to understand the power of water in shaping the karst landscape and to enjoy profound silence (if you avoid very crowded weekends during peak season).
