How pintxos really work in San Sebastián
What to order, how to eat, and how not to get ripped off

San Sebastián , Spain
Pintxos aren’t meant to be a sit-down meal. The idea is to order 1–2 bites and a drink, then move on to the next bar.
In most places, you’ll order directly at the bar. Cold pintxos are usually displayed on the counter, while hot dishes are ordered from staff or written on a chalkboard.
Prices are typically per piece, not per plate. Keep track of what you eat, as many bars still count at the end rather than itemising.
Locals stand at the bar, eat quickly, and move on. Don’t linger too long — part of the experience is the flow from place to place.
What not to do:
Don’t grab lots of pintxos at once and settle in for ages — ordering little and moving on is part of the culture.
Extra confidence level:
If you’re unsure how a bar works, pause for 30 seconds and watch what locals do before ordering. You’ll quickly see whether to point at the counter, ask for hot dishes, or order drinks first — and it helps you avoid tourist mistakes without feeling awkward.
