✈️ While it’s not the most glamorous part of travel planning, having your paperwork, health prep, and logistics sorted will save you a world of stress once you land. Here’s everything you need to know so you can breeze through the airport and get straight to the good stuff.

  1. Tourist visa stamp on arrival. Citizens from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and most of Europe get a free 90-day tourist visa on arrival. 🎉

  2. Passport requirements. Make sure yours is valid for at least 30 days beyond your departure and has at least 2 blank pages (some airlines may ask for proof of onward travel, too).

  3. Back up your docs. Carry digital and physical copies of your passport, ID, and travel insurance just in case.

  4. Driving in SA. Your home driver’s license is usually accepted, but double-check before renting a car.

  5. Stay informed. Consider signing up for your country’s traveller program to get safety alerts and emergency support abroad.

  6. Vaccines & health.

    • No mandatory vaccines for South Africa.

    • Yellow fever vaccine is only required if you’re arriving from (or transiting >12 hours through) a yellow fever country.

    • Kruger and some bush areas are low-risk malaria zones — some travelers take antimalarials, others just use good insect repellent.

  7. Healthcare. South Africa has excellent private hospitals (Mediclinic, Netcare). Be sure your travel insurance includes medical evacuation.

  8. Water safety. Tap water is generally safe in cities, but stick to bottled water in rural areas to avoid tummy troubles.
