A fascinating and mysterious geological formation southwest of Moab, Utah. This 10-kilometer-wide circular feature is believed to be either a salt dome pushed up through rock layers or the site of a meteorite impact—though recent discoveries of shocked quartz suggest the impact theory may be correct. The center of the dome reveals deep rock layers like the Permian Organ Rock Shale, with other colorful formations like the Moenkopi, Chinle, Wingate, Kayenta, and Navajo Sandstone stacked above.

Visitors can access the site via paved roads within the national park, followed by a short drive on a well-maintained gravel road to the Upheaval Dome Trailhead. From there, a 1-mile roundtrip hike (with some elevation gain) leads to the first overlook, offering sweeping views into the center of the crater-like structure. A second, slightly longer overlook trail extends the hike for those wanting a more complete perspective.

Dogs are allowed in certain parts of Canyonlands, including along paved roads and in parking lots, but they must be kept on a leash and are not allowed on unpaved trails or in the backcountry—including the Upheaval Dome hiking trail itself. If you’re traveling with a pet, it's best to plan around the limitations or enjoy the overlook from nearby vehicle-accessible spots.

Entrance fees to Canyonlands National Park are $30 per vehicle (valid for 7 days). Annual and national park passes are also accepted.

Camping near Upheaval Dome is available at Willow Flat Campground, located within the Island in the Sky district. It’s a small, first-come, first-served campground with 12 basic sites that include picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets—but no water. For those looking for a more remote experience, backcountry camping is allowed with a permit, which can be reserved in advance.

The best times to visit are spring and fall when temperatures are cooler and more comfortable for hiking. Sunrise and sunset are especially magical for photographers, as the shifting light adds depth and dimension to the layers of exposed rock.

Upheaval Dome offers a perfect mix of geological wonder, scenic beauty, and quiet desert vibes—making it a must-stop if you’re exploring Canyonlands or road-tripping through southern Utah.
