If you love a good viewpoint, you need to check out Miradouro da Vista dos Barcos. It’s got everything you want, dramatic cliffs, endless ocean views, and a picturesque lighthouse that looks like it belongs on a postcard. Plus, it’s one of those spots that’s still a bit under the radar, so you won’t have to fight crowds to enjoy the view.

Where Is It?

Miradouro da Vista dos Barcos is in Nordeste, one of the most stunning (and underrated) regions of São Miguel. It’s on the island’s northeastern coast, It’s about 50 km (31 miles) from Ponta Delgada, which takes around 45–60 mins by car depending on how often you stop for photos (trust me, you’ll want to). The drive itself is an experience, with winding roads, lush greenery, and plenty of other viewpoints along the way. Nordeste is known for its untouched natural beauty, so getting here is just as rewarding as the destination itself.

What Makes It Special?

This viewpoint gives you a perfect look at the Ponta do Arnel lighthouse, the first lighthouse ever built in the Azores. It’s perched on a rocky cliff, with the Atlantic stretching endlessly behind it. If you look down, you’ll also see the tiny Porto do Arnel, a small fishing harbour where local fishermen launch their boats at sunrise. That’s actually where the name comes from—“Vista dos Barcos” means “View of the Boats.”

How to Get There 🗺️

By car – The easiest way to reach the viewpoint is by renting a car. There’s a small parking area nearby.

By tour – If you don’t want to drive, there are guided tours that explore Nordeste and include stops at multiple miradouros.

By foot – If you’re up for a bit of a workout, you can walk down the steep road toward the lighthouse and harbor. Just know that coming back up is a leg burner.

When to Visit

Sunrise – The early morning light here is unreal, and it’s usually quiet since most people aren’t up yet.

Midday – Great for clear views, but it can get bright, so bring sunglasses.

Sunset – Soft, golden light makes for beautiful photos, but keep in mind that shadows can cover parts of the cliffside.

What Else to Do Nearby

Nordeste Village – A charming little town with traditional Azorean vibes, perfect for grabbing a coffee or a local snack.

Good to Know

Facilities – There aren’t any at the viewpoint itself, so plan accordingly. The nearest toilets and cafés are in Nordeste.

Weather – Nordeste can be a bit misty, especially in the mornings. If it’s cloudy, wait a bit—weather changes fast in the Azores.

Safety – There are barriers, but still, be mindful near the edges, especially if it’s windy.

Miradouro da Vista dos Barcos is one of those places that makes you pause and appreciate the moment. It’s peaceful, naturally stunning, and a must-see if you’re exploring São Miguel. Whether you’re just stopping for a quick photo or taking your time to soak in the view, you won’t regret adding this spot to your itinerary.
