Let me introduce you to Cascata do Grená. Tucked away near Furnas Lake, this spot is pure magic.. think lush green forest, a cascading waterfall straight out of a fairytale, and the peaceful sounds of nature all around. If that sounds like your kind of vibe you’re going to love it!

Getting There: Where Is Cascata do Grená?

Cascata do Grená is located near Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake), one of the most beautiful places on São Miguel Island. You’ll find it inside the Grená Park, a private nature park that covers a massive 18 hectares of untouched forest.

How to Get There 🗺️

  • If you're driving, head toward Furnas and park near the entrance to Grená Park, which is on the lake’s northeastern side.

  • There’s an entry fee but trust me—it’s worth every cent.

    Entrance Fee & Opening Hours

Since the waterfall is inside Grená Park, you’ll need to pay an entrance fee:

    • Adults: Around €3-5

    • Kids: Usually free or discounted

Opening Hours: Generally 9 AM – 6 PM, but check before you go, as times may change seasonally.

  • Once inside, the hike to the waterfall is short but a little steep in places, so wear comfortable shoes.

The Hike: What to Expect 💦

This isn’t a long hike— about 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how often you stop to admire the view (which will be often). The trail takes you through a dense, almost jungle-like forest, with towering Japanese cedars, moss-covered rocks, and hidden streams. It feels like stepping into another world.

When you finally reach the Cascata do Grená, get ready for that “wow” moment. The waterfall drops gracefully into a small pool, surrounded by vibrant greenery. It’s not the tallest or the most powerful waterfall on the island, but it’s definitely one of the most beautiful.

Best Time to Visit

Morning or late afternoon: Fewer people, better lighting for photos, and a more peaceful experience.

After rainfall: The waterfall is at its fullest, but the trail can be a little muddy.

Best photo spots 📸

  • The waterfall from below: Stand in front of it for that classic nature shot.

  • From the trail above: A different perspective showing the waterfall peeking through the trees.

  • The mossy rocks and wooden bridges: These spots give off major enchanted-forest vibes.
