Mary King's Close in Edinburgh, Scotland is an unusual haunt of mysterious origins. It is made up of 17th century streets tucked away under the city of Edinburgh and was once the unfortunate breeding ground for the Black Death. A persistent myth claims that it was sealed off at one point when the Black Death struck, but an efficient and compassionate local council took measures to care for victims instead. To this day, tourists flock for its macabre history and purported ghostly inhabitants. One of Mary King's Close's most famous specters is a 10-year-old girl named Annie who succumbed to the plague. Visitors sometimes leave toys and sweets for her spirit, and the historic close hosts events like Christmas tours for a unique glimpse into its former life.
