Gros Morne is one of the highest points on the island, but unlike Piton des Neiges, it sees almost no foot traffic. Sitting at 3019 metres, it’s wild, exposed, and often cloaked in mist. The trail begins near Bélouve or Piton des Neiges refuges and passes through cloud forest, ridgelines, and sections that feel more alpine than tropical.

It’s not well-marked and it’s not gentle. The terrain becomes slippery and narrow in places, and navigation can be tough if the clouds roll in. But if you catch it on a clear day, the views across Salazie, Cilaos, and the volcanic interior are massive. You’ll feel like you’re walking the backbone of the island.

👉 Start before sunrise and check the forecast obsessively. Fog closes in fast, and once it does, there’s no view, no path, and no margin for error.
